Since its premiere in March 2022, Our flag means death has consistently shown why it deserves to be considered one of the best shows on HBO. What begins as a rather charming and funny story about the escapades of a group of misfit pirates soon becomes something much more, especially as it focuses on the deep and surprisingly meaningful romance between Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard.
Luckily for fans of the show, there are a number of other TV offerings that, in one form or another, hit some of the same notes and address some of the same issues.
Black Sails (2014-2017) – Streaming on Starz
Starz has excelled in creating a number of thrilling costume dramas, and one of the best examples is black sails. It starts as a sort of prequel to treasure islandfocusing on the character of Captain Flint, his backstory, and the war between pirates and the British Empire.
While it starts out as a fairly traditional swashbuckler, it soon goes deeper, exploring its characters’ actions and their sometimes grim consequences. Moreover, with its well-executed CGI, it manages to immerse the viewer in the unforgiving world of the golden age of piracy.
Peacemaker (2022-) – Streaming on HBO Max
One of the most attractive aspects of Our flag means death is its humor, and it manages never to take itself too seriously, even as it engages in heavier thematic material.
A similar dynamic is at work in Peacemaker, the superhero series centered on the character of the same name. There’s no denying that John Cena brings his goofy charm to the role, but the show also works hard to explore the unfortunate consequences vigilantism often brings.
The Boba Fett Book (2021-) – Streaming on Disney+

The MCU is arguably one of the most successful franchises of all time, and it continues to dominate both movies and television. While Wanda Vision explored grief and its consequences, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier look at what a post-apocalypse world looks like.
However, there’s no doubt that a big part of the show’s appeal is the bond between the two main characters, who gradually develop a grudging respect and even love for each other. With a focus on the relationships that develop between men, it’s sure to please fans of Our flag means death.
The Legend of Vox Machina (2022) – Streaming on Prime Video
Among others, Our flag means death is a tale of adventure, and if they are sometimes clumsy, its pirates nevertheless manage to get into fantastic galleys. For this reason, fans of the series are sure to enjoy The Legend of Vox Machinawhich focuses on the group of titles as they are employed by the king to defend the kingdom.

And, like its HBO Max counterpart, it also encourages the viewer to truly love its protagonists, who come across as flawed but essentially good people doing their best in a dark and uncertain world.
Killing Eve (2018-Present) – Streaming on Hulu
Kill Eve is one of the most unique series on television, and part of that stems from its deft blend of spy thriller and comedy. It thus achieves a mixture of genres that makes it an ideal choice for those who appreciate the similar dynamics at work in Our flag means death.
Equally important, the central relationship between Eve and Villanelle (one of the most important in the series) is sure to draw parallels with the bond that emerges between Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard.
Veep (2012-2019) – Airing on HBO Max
Our flag means death will almost certainly be considered one of HBO’s funniest comedies.
If so, he will be in good company, including the series Veep, which centers on fictional Vice President Selina Meyer as she deals with the various stresses and frustrations of America’s second most powerful office. It’s a bitter and sometimes acerbic comedy, but there’s no doubt that it remains one of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ best roles.
