The City of Shreveport’s purchase of the long-defunct Millennium Studios and its hosting from an animation company was announced at a Thursday afternoon press conference by Mayor Adrian Perkins on the studio’s campus. .
Animation and visual effects company Troubled Muse will move to Shreveport to operate from Millennium Studios and promises to create 53 jobs in the area in the first year paying an average salary of $74,000.
Troubled Muse will create original content for film and television, specializing in animation, visual effects and motion capture.
Company CEO Andru Davies said it will create 200 jobs in total. Mayor Perkins said the business will attract another 40 indirect jobs in the first year.
Additionally, it was announced that the Southern University of Shreveport would offer film production courses and apprenticeships in hopes of building a base of world-class film production employees.
A city representative said the city had been contacted by FX Studios, Warner Brothers, Disney, Netflix and other companies over the past year and a half with an interest in filming in Shreveport, but the companies had struggled to recruit production crews in the past.
“To anyone here who may have had friends or family who moved away because tech jobs left or movie jobs moved elsewhere, please tell them, come back, because there are jobs here and we need people,” says Davies.
Troubled Muse was courted at Millennium Studios with the help of the Entertainment Job Creation Program, which Governor John Bel Edwards signed into law in 2017 and allows employers to claim a 15% and 20% payroll tax credit for jobs paying at least $45,000 or $66,000, respectively.
Millennium Studios “went black” in November 2015, with then-president Diego Martinez saying he would be among five of the company’s six laid-off workers, with only one employee kept guarding the building.
