COVID is really wreaking havoc on Broadway, as we know it.
Sad news this morning that âAin’t Too Proud,â the Temptations musical, will end on January 16 after 88 performances (pending possible additional COVID cancellations) and 21 premieres.
I loved this show and will try to see it again in the next few weeks. The castings were incredible. Dominique Morrisseau did such a great job with the original book from Temptations singer Otis Williams. Just hearing these songs on stage and seeing Motown’s original dance moves is exhilarating. we can only hope that down the line, “Ain’t Too Proud” will return once this whole COVID mess is over!
Performances resume tonight for three weeks on Broadway and Washington at the Kennedy Center. There, a national tour is underway – don’t miss it!
The other news is that David Byrne’s âAmerican Utopiaâ returns tonight, but scaled down so the show can continue. This remarkable cast has been touched by COVID. So David reconfigures and plays some songs from his solo career that don’t require so many performers.
Byrne says, âWhat we’re doing could be called Unplugged, or maybe Unchained. We are adding a few songs from Talking Heads as well as songs from my solo catalog, which will complement songs already in American Utopia. I know it will be a âonce in a lifetimeâ experience, which will only be seen for a few performances. We are ready to have a good time!
I’ll see that one too. If you are a Byrne or Talking Heads fan, again don’t miss this!
During New Years week, “American Utopia” offers performances on December 28 at 8 p.m., December 29 at 8 p.m., December 30 at 5 and 9 p.m., January 1, 2022 at 5 p.m. and January 2 at 3 p.m.
