Matthew “Matt” Wayne Gobert, 57, of Utopia died on October 3, 2021 at the Methodist Metropolitan Hospital in San Antonio. There will be a funeral service tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Jones Cemetery in Utopia.

He was born in Baytown on March 24, 1964, to Pat (Perkins) and Milton Gobert.

His family said he had a zest for life and enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends. He loved adventure and we often found him on the lake. They said he had a sense of humor that could make anyone laugh, and they will always remember him for his big heart and kind smile.

He is survived by his parents, of Utopia; son, Cody Gobert and wife, Jenny, of Utopia; her daughter Shelby Barfield and her husband, Zack, from Utopia; grandsons, Solomon Gobert, Noah Gobert, Grayson Barfield and Myles Barfield; sister, Valerie Moore and husband, Ernie, of Utopia; Brother Monty Gobert and wife, Gaynell, of Utopia; uncle, Eddie Howard and wife, Debbie, of Highlands; two nieces, Kelsey Moore and her fiance, Colby Stephens, and Kristin Neill and her husband, Nathan; nephews, Chase Gobert and companion, Katelynne Brown, and Jake Gobert; many great-nieces and grand-nephews; longtime friend Elizabeth Milam of Sabinal; close family, Bill Payton, Carol Payton and Ethan Diechler, all of Utopia; and many close friends and family.

He was predeceased by his son, Dustin Gobert; grandparents, Mary and Milton Gobert Sr .; uncle, Jimmy Gobert; and niece, Kimber Moore.

Honorary bearers will be Eddie Howard, Ty Howard, Dallas Howard, Cobey Keith, Jody Rutherford, Jimmy Speer, Clay Knuckles, Ralph Perez, Mark “Bubba” Owens, John Casparis, Todd Wilson, his fishing buddies and the Steering Committee family. .

Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations to Gobert’s savings account at the First State Bank of Uvalde to help pay for funeral and medical expenses.
