The Ministry of Social Protection hopes to complete construction of a new Golden Age house in Labasa within two months.
Minister Rosy Akbar said the construction of the new state house in Labasa and the modernization of the existing one is valued at $ 4 million.
âAs the construction of the new house progresses, they are still being taken care of in the other buildings that are still there. This budget gives us $ 1.7 million for the completion of the construction work and $ 0.2 million is allocated for the furniture, the equipment of the house of the golden age in Labasa.
The Minister also thanked the Australian government for providing $ 2.3 million to care homes for three elderly people in Fiji.
This will ensure that there will be more caregivers, housekeepers, laundry chefs and cooks in state homes.
The minister also pointed out that all the elderly in state homes across the country are safe from COVID-19 despite a few contracting the virus.
