Journalist Amrita Dutta also laments the fact that there is no room for group family viewing in this era of stories intended exclusively for personal screens. Stuck at home with her elderly parents and her young daughter during confinement, she strongly felt this pinch: “there is a lack of content content, in the middle of the road. boxes like caste, politics, sex… “She adds that if violence exists everywhere in India, the trick is to frame it with sensitivity, instead of dehumanizing women or trans people, in particular, like some people. of these dramas tend to do so in the name of showing reality.
That said, this new wave of streaming content seems to be connecting with Indian audiences. But it may not yet be ready to capture global audiences, as Korean dramas have been doing successfully for some time now, or French television more recently. Upadhyay says, “There is no reason why this should not happen, but for it Indian producers must prepare to speak to the world with more universal themes, even if they keep the local stories.”
But while the international dominance of India’s television industry may still be a long way off, these shows are now taking the country’s own citizens to imaginative places they’ve never been before – and many viewers are grateful for it.
